¶ The Royal Museum for Central Africa was founded in 1898, but its current building was inaugurated in 1910 and is characterised by many symbols reflecting the colonial propaganda of the time. The grand rotunda, designed to serve as the museum entrance, plays host to a series of statues that are strong examples of such imagery, reflecting fundamentally racist stereotypes. Between 2013 and 2018, the RMCA underwent a major renovation that saw a substantial redesign of the permanent exhibition, with the involvement of members of the African diaspora in Belgium. A major challenge of the renovation was to demonstrate the will to decolonise a listed building that is legally protected against changes. As removal of the colonial statues was not allowed, the museum was forced to find innovative solutions, notably by inviting contemporary African artists to create installations to dialogue, contrast, and discuss with colonial messages. Congolese artist Aimé Mpane was chosen to make such an installation in the rotunda in 2018 with New breath, or Burgeoning Congo. Public reaction helped the AfricaMuseum realise that it needed to go further. Along with the creation of a second sculpture, Aimé Mpane, in co-creation with Belgian artist Jean Pierre Müller, proposed the RE/STORE project: a permanent installation of transparent veils, each bearing a contemporary message, hung in front of every statue in the rotunda. The themes addressed in this collection of veils interact with the viewer in a powerful and eloquent manner. ¶ What is a house? What is dwelling? How can a house be a body? What does ''being modern'' mean in rural Africa? How are local and global worlds intertwined through material culture? This book reflects on the meanings of housing in West Africa by analysing vernacular architectural traditions and the related ideas and worldviews grounding these building traditions. In the West, much attention is paid to the quality of housing in terms of material comfort and durability. However, houses no longer grow organically, and are no longer layered by time, or embedded in a social community and intertwined with the natural environment. The house, and even more the interior of the house, has become an expression of the individuality of the inhabitant (witness the whole marketing of lifestyle, design, interior decoration, cocooning, etcetera). Paradoxically, though, this goes hand in hand with the erosion of the house as a signifier. Houses are becoming almost generic realities, without a memory or a past, the anonymous results of mass-production, or the interchangeable, standardized products of a globalised Ikea and turnkey culture. Many of the important phases of the lifecycles of the inhabitants no longer unfold within the house, but are evacuated to spaces external to it (hospitals, restaurants, hotels, party rooms, funeral homes, banquet halls). In contrast to the poor signifier that the Western house has become, the chapters in this book analyse the rich meanings embedded in the processes of dwelling in rural West African worlds, with a specific emphasis on Ghana and Burkina Faso. At the same time, the authors document the changes that are manifest in the material and social structures of these houses, and show the flexibility and responsiveness of traditional practices of building and dwelling when confronted with the influences of urban modernity. As such, this reflection on local architectural forms also deals with many of the challenges and issues currently facing Africa.

¶ Congo Stars does not attempt to trace the historic development or even deliver a definition of what popular painting in the Congo is. It is in fact much more about the dimension of fiction in the writing of its history. Processes of nation building, facets of social order or the realities of everyday life are the major themes of popular art in the Congo. Painters see themselves as reporters or chroniclers of the everyday. They tell stories and thus offer an alternative historiography, confronting the traditional colonial narrative. ¶ Congo Stars does not attempt to trace the historic development or even deliver a definition of what popular painting in the Congo is. It is in fact much more about the dimension of fiction in the writing of its history. Processes of nation building, facets of social order or the realities of everyday life are the major themes of popular art in the Congo. Painters see themselves as reporters or chroniclers of the everyday. They tell stories and thus offer an alternative historiography, confronting the traditional colonial narrative. OEuvres de differents groupes habitant le Delta interieur du Niger, dans le Mali actuel, autour de l'ancien centre urbain de Djenne-jeno, ces sculptures en terre cuite, dont plus de 300 sont publiees pour la premiere fois dans ce livre, expriment une remarquable variete de conditions physiques et d'emotions humaines, ce qui en fait le plus vaste ensemble de gestes sacres de toutes les civilisations de l'Afrique subsaharienne. En 1982, de vastes fouilles au Mali ont mene a des decouvertes fascinantes sur la fonction de cette statuaire ancienne en terre cuite, elegante et raffinee, ainsi que sur sa signification religieuse et culturelle. Djenne-jeno analyse cet important corpus de sculptures, representatives d'un des arts mandes d'Afrique occidentale et en majeure partie non publiees, et revele des rapports potentiels entre des regions d'Afrique occidentale dont les styles artistiques etaient jusqu'ici consideres comme ayant evolue de facon autonome. Rehausse de centaines d'illustrations en couleurs, cet ouvrage apporte une contribution fondamentale a l'etude d'une forme artistique pratiquement inconnue il y a quelques decennies. Bernard de Grunne a consacre a ce theme une these en histoire de l'art africain, a l'universite de Yale, en 1987. Specialiste de la terre cuite africaine ancienne, il est un pionnier de l'etude des Mains de maitres dans l'evolution des styles artistiques africains.

The terracotta statues were manufactured by various groups inhabiting the Inland Niger Delta region of present-day Mali, centered around the ancient urban center of Djenne-jeno. These terracotta sculptures, more than 300 of which are published in this book for the first time, express a remarkable range of physical conditions and human emotions, providing the largest corpus of ancient sacred gestures of any civilization in Sub-Saharan Africa. Extensive fieldwork in Mali in 1982 led to fascinating discoveries about the function of this elegant and sophisticated ancient terracotta statuary as well as its religious and cultural significance. Djenne-jeno investigates this important and mainly unpublished corpus of terracotta statuary of one of the Mande art styles of West Africa, and traces potential connections between regions in West Africa whose artistic styles were previously thought to have developed independently. Generously illustrated with hundreds of color images, this book represents a major contribution to the study of an art form virtually unknown until a few decades ago. Featuring considerable new scholarship on over 300 ancient terracotta statues, Djenne-jeno is an authoritative volume on the history of art and religious practices in several regions of West Africa.
